About Us

 Our Business and Our Committment

The Little Environmentalists, LLC is committed to developing and publishing children’s environmental education materials to promote environmental awareness, appreciation, knowledge, and stewardship.
Our company is also dedicated to sustainable business practices and producing products in an environmentally friendly manner. Our books are printing on 100% recycled paper with 100% post consumer waste that is chlorine free and we also use environmentally friendly ink.
We are always looking at ways that we can improve our business practices and products by keeping abreast of the current technology available to lessen our impact on the environment.

Our products begin with a series of books that will help develop an appreciation for nature which with continued education will lead to a strong environmental ethic.
This strong ethic will help lead us into an innovation environmental future where our children will become the environmental leaders of tomorrow not for monetary reasons but because they appreciate and value nature and the environment.

The first book in the series, entitled Nature Discovery In My Backyard, has children uses their senses to explore nature that can be found right in their backyard. Children will smell, hear, feel, and see their way through their very own backyard nature discovery. This book (and the complete series) is aimed at 2-6 and is not only a simple way for children to connect with nature and the environment, but also includes an educational component on each page to guide and challenge children (parents and educators) to find all that nature has to offer.
This first series will also contain three other books; I’m Turning Green (to be released December 1, 2008), The Circle of Life (coming soon) and My Backyard Habitat (coming soon).
The theme of each book will be learning and connecting with nature and the environment at home. Each book will contain educational materials to help both parents and children learn simple ways to be environmentally friendly and also gain an appreciation for nature and the environment. Children, parents, and educators will find useful tips for their backyard nature discovery, going green at home, and building your own backyard habitat.

About the Author

Rebecca Mattano is a mother of two daughters; Sierra Rose, 3 and Madeline Sage, 1, an adjunct professor at Carroll University in Environmental Science, a volunteer teacher naturalist at Retzer Nature Center, a Water Action Volunteer testing water quality in Waukesha County, and recently a business owner developing and publishing children’s environmental education materials.

Rebecca has received a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Conservation and Environmental Science, a MS from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Natural Resources with an emphasis on Environmental Education and Interpretation. She also holds certificates and completed training for Teacher-Naturalist, Leave No Trace, Project Wet and Wild, LEAF, and water quality testing.

Rebecca finished her BA at UW-Milwaukee in 2001 after graduating from the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps program in 1999. She then continued her career working with governmental agencies; The Bureau of Land Management (mapping Wilderness Areas in Nevada) and The Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (collecting data on gypsy moth populations) doing field research. After years in field work her ambitions steered her into the graduate program at UW-Stevens Point where she completed her MS in 2005. Shortly after completing her graduate degree she and her husband, Brian, had their first child.

In the fall of 2005 Rebecca began her position as adjunct professor at Carroll University and after a short break with the birth of her second child in 2007, she is still teaching in the Environmental science department today. Rebecca enjoys her position at Carroll University as it allows her to work part-time so she can enjoy as much time as possible with her two young children who are the inspiration and motivation for the books and the company. Rebecca has found a way to merge her passions (the environment) and her skills (education). Rebecca has spent the last 12 years educating herself and others about the environment and environmental issues. She understands that education is the key to a sustainable future and it is never too early to begin talking with our children about nature and the environment.

Notes from the Author:
“I believe that we are facing numerous environmental issues that have gotten severe due to the lack of education, appreciation, and understanding of the environment. In essence I believe we have lost touch with nature and we are now realizing the importance of connecting our young people with their environment through education. These books and this company provide a valuable resource for that nature connection and environmental appreciation both at home and in the classroom.”

“We all want what is best for our children so we as parents and educators need to start thinking about the long-term sustainability and with that focusing on not only teaching our children about the environment, but learning more about it with our children.”
